Sand used for plaster work can be natural sand, crushed stone sand or crushed gravel sand. The grading limit of sand for plaster work; for internal and external wall and ceiling should be as given in the table below.

Notes to Remember
- In case the grading falls outside the limits of the grading zones of sieves (except 150, 300 & 600 micron IS sieves) by a total amount not exceeding 5%, it shall be regarded as falling within the gradation.
- For crushed stone sands and crushed gravel sands, the permissible limit on 150 micron IS sieve is increased to 20%.
- Fineness modulus of sand should be as per the following table.

our company purchasing River sand(fine) for Rs.1,000/- Per MT, where as the Market rate was 1,900/- per M.T, we sent the sample for testing the results are as follow

Manufactured sand from VSI can be classified by dry process for manufacturing of both construction and plaster sand confirming to IS. Micro fines are removed and particle size distribution confirms to IS code. No air classifier required just high frequency screen from Rhewum will do the job. Power consumption is also very less around 15% of normal process adopted and now water or chemical additive is required.
Very informative. Thank you for sharing and simplifying. However i have used an admixture (named Master Plaster MPCS !01) from Razon Engineering Co, along with Cement + Sand plaster and it has given exceptional results in terms of workability and reducing crack formations inspite of variations in the sand gradation. I found that even crushed sand / M-sand can be used (zone -2) without any difficulty.
It gave good workability in the cement sand mortar, good bonding to the masonry and no cracking in the finished plaster.
