Compaction should not be confused with consolidation. At the end of the consolidation and/or compaction process, a closer packing of soil grains results, which leads to increased shear strength and decreased compressibility and permeability.
Difference Between Compaction and Consolidation
Soil Compaction
- It is a dynamic process
- Compaction is almost instantaneous
- Densification is due to reduction of air voids
- Soil is always unsaturated
- For a specific compactive effort densification takes place only up to certain limiting water content called optimum moisture content
- Compaction is done before the construction of structure
Soil Consolidation
- It is a static process
- Consolidation is a static process
- Consolidation is due to expulsion of pore water from voids
- Soil is considered to be completely saturated
- The process of consolidation starts as soon as the construction work begins
Thank. It was very helpful for me
Hellow sir
Good evening. I have one question that for calculation of sbc of soil how sample is taken .also shear pocedure to calculate sbc in lab
Thanks
Thanksss for explanation of consolidation
Thanks 4enlighting us on soil compactn
A good information about soil compaction and consolidation.
Thx for good explanations. keep it up!
