Design Considerations for Kitchen

The kitchen is a busy place where we prepare meals, store food, keep utensils, and sometimes even dine and do laundry.

We often spend a lot of time in the kitchen, so it’s crucial to plan it well.

This means choosing the right appliances, organizing storage, and arranging everything for convenience. Let’s break down some important points to consider for an efficient kitchen.

1. Arrangement

Make sure the main work area is organized and doesn’t take up too much space.

Think about how more than one person might work in the kitchen at the same time. Because there is a high probability of more than one person working inside kitchen.

The arrangement will vary based on how much space you have, but it’s important to plan the layout considering how different areas in the kitchen connect.

2. Storage

Plan storage so that it’s easy to reach items without stretching or bending too much.

Shelves and storage spaces should be at a height that anyone can comfortably reach without a struggle. The storage facilities should not be higher than a user can reach with both feet flat on the floor.

Also, design it in a way that you can see what’s stored, making it easy to find and take out items without any hassle.

It shall be preferred to provide adjustable shelving.

3. Cooking Worktops

The surfaces where you cook should be at a height that’s comfortable for you.

The height of the cooking surface, especially for gas stoves, needs to be just right to make cooking easy and safe.

At the cooking top, where gas stoves are employed, the height of finished level shall not be more than 750 mm from finished floor level and in case of other stoves like kerosene pressure stove it shall not be less than 700 mm.

If you use gas cylinders, plan for a suitable storage space under the cooking top.

Normally the height of bottled gas 14 kg does not exceed more than 725 mm with collar and holding rings.

4. Worktops

The height of work surfaces should be within a range that’s comfortable for working.

Work top height should not exceed more than 800 mm from the finished floor level.

Keep in mind that the depth and width of the cooking and worktop areas can vary based on your kitchen’s size and shape but ensure they’re practical and efficient. The depth shall not be more than 600 mm.

The width of the cooking as well as the work top may vary according to the shape and size of the kitchen but in any case, should not be less than 900 mm for each activity.

It is recommended to avoid storage facility above the cooking top.

The high level storage facility open or lockable may be provided under the work top.

5. Materials

Choose materials that are easy to clean and maintain.

You want surfaces and finishes that don’t require a lot of effort to keep tidy.

6. Lighting

Ensure good lighting in the kitchen to make it easy to work.

Adequate lighting, either natural or artificial, will brighten up the space and make it more pleasant.

It’s also great to have some exposure to natural light.

Plan your lighting in a way that will give you minimum shadow throughout the kitchen area.

7. Ventilation

Having good ventilation in the kitchen is crucial to keep it fresh and free from strong odors.

Make sure there’s a way for air to flow freely, either naturally or through mechanical means.

8. Safety

Your kitchen should be safe.

Avoid sharp edges, handles, or knobs that can cause injuries.

Also, secure cabinets and drawers to keep children safe.

9. Measurements

Pay attention to the right dimensions and proportions when setting up your kitchen.

Refer to Fig-1 to make sure everything fits and is comfortable to use.
