Consistency of mortar is tested by using a standard cone apparatus. In this test a cone weighing 300 g is allowed to fall from a specified height to penetrate through the mortar. The depth of penetration of the cone is called its consistency value. It is expressed in mm. To read the test procedure click here.
Recommended Values of Consistency
The recommended values of consistency of mortar for different types of work are as follows.

For laying walls with solid bricks | 90 to 130 mm |
For laying perforated bricks | 70 to 80 mm |
For filling cavities | 130 to 150 mm |
